Additions of carbon to the MeB2 borides, on the other hand, are not likely to cause similar changes in microstructure and properties. The refractory diborides are stable in the presence of graphite a property that may be useful in many applications. E~~l During the study of the phase relationships in the Rh-Si system, single crystals of the compositions Rh4SiS and Rh3Si4 have been synthesized. The crystal structures of these compounds have been determined and the present communication gives an account of the structures and their relation to structure types already known.

7. The Ta distribution traverse taken along the path shown clearly reveals the presence of a Ta rich surface layer and a Ta solid solution diffusion gradient. The surface exhibited a series of layers and multiphase structures were evident below the surface. The surface layer ~as found to be pure TaC while the eutectic structures were a mixture of Mo metal (with Ta in solution) and a Mo-Ta carbide. Thermal decomposition of the M0 2C crystal had occurred throughout the crystal even in regions uncontaminated with Ta.
